Ollie Overcomes!
Ollie the octopus loves school. He loves seeing and talking to his friends, and learning about his underwater world. But sometimes, Ollie is too sad or scared or upset to go to school.
When Mr. Nudibranch, Ollie’s teacher, talks too fast, Ollie can’t keep up with his notes and Ollie gets mad and confused.
When Ollie gets mad, his friends are mean to him, and that makes Ollie sad. It helps Ollie to go to a quiet place in the room where he can be by himself and calm down. Then Ollie can rejoin his class and his friends.
Ollie asks Mr. Nudibranch if he can copy notes from his friend Sally the seahorse so that he can keep up. This helps Ollie focus on listening during class, and then review thenotesathome.
Ollie has a test next week! Ollie asks Mr. Nudibranch to help him make a list of all the things he needs to know for the test so Ollie can practice them at home. Mr. Nudibranch also shows Ollie how to make foldables and they write some mnemonics to help Ollie remember certain things.
The list helps the test less scary because Ollie can break it down into different pieces. Ollie uses a foldable and mnemonic devices to remember parts of the material. Ollie shows his friends the foldable, and they like it so much he helps each of them make their own!
Now Ollie knows everything for the test, but he’s still worried. During the test, everyone has to work quietly at the table for the whole test time. But Ollie feels like he must move around!
On the day of the test, Ollie talks to Mr. Nudibranch about how worried he is. He thinks for a bit, and tells Ollie he has an idea to help him be comfortable during the test. Ollie sits down and starts his test. Thirty minutes later, Mr. Nudibranch tells everyone to put down their pens and get out of their seats!
Ollie floats around the room to stretch and feels better! He high fives his classmates as they stretch and move around. When it’s time for the class to get back to work, everyone returns to their test and Ollie is able to finish without feeling restless.
At the end of the day, Ollie thanks Mr. Nudibranch for giving him time to move around! Ollie’s friends and classmates liked the break, too. The next day, Ollie gets back his test and he scored an A! Mr. Nudibranch says he’s very proud of Ollie, and Ollie feels really good, too.
Ollie was able to identify ahead of time what he struggled with in school. With this, Ollie was able to ask his teacher for help and suggestions for studying. Ollie knew that he had test anxiety, so the teacher helped him make a list and study guide. Having specific items laid out in a list alleviated some of Ollie’s anxiety about the test, and using mnemonics and foldables helped Ollie understand and remember the material.
Mr. Nudibranch helped Ollie succeed by listening to what he needed and offering creative solutions. By offering accommodations for the entire class and not singling Ollie out, Mr. Nudibranch made the classroom a warm and inviting place for Ollie, supporting him and encouraging his attendance.
